Census Support

This site provides specialized Census support for the U-M Campus and is maintained by PSC Data Services. Our primary audience is users who have large scale census-based projects, expect to manipulate many files and often have a national focus.

Check out our Tools area. These links will help users with access to census data. We have a section devoted to tools for census microdata and a section for census summary data.

Users can access data files and documentation that have been formatted into more convenient formats than those originally provided by the Census Bureau at our Data Center.

Look under Subject Areas for information on apportionment, the new coding of race, changes in metropolitan definitions, a database of FIPS codes and other reference materials. We also provide links to other Census 2000 sites that have somewhat different foci than ours.

This site is for users that are accustomed to manipulating data. If you are interested in seeing pre-formatted tables or simple tabulations, please see either the Census Bureau's Census 2000 website or American FactFinder.

If you are part of the University of Michigan user community, there are other resources that may better serve your needs. The Documents library can assist users who need help with pre-tabulated census files and/or need guidance in the use of software associated with CD-ROM products, instruction on web interfaces to data, and the production of simple maps. Another campus resource is Numeric & Spatial Data Services, which can help users find, access, or download data (numeric and spatial) files from various electronic sources, including ICPSR, and provide guidance in using statistical and GIS software. The Map library can help users with the production of simple to complex maps based on census geography. A fuller description of all U-M campus resources is also available.

For more information on data availability see the Census Bureau's Census 2000 Release Schedule.
