Shapefiles [US Census Bureau: TIGER/Line Shapefiles]
The TIGER/Line shapefiles provide geographic and cartographic information from the Census. These files contain geographic features and legal/statistical areas. The year-specific shapefiles correspond to the American Community Survey, Population Estimates, Economic Census, and decennial Census.
NHGIS boundary files are based on the TIGER/Line data that the US Census Bureau creates, which NHGIS staff edited to produce all pre-1990 boundaries. The primary guide for historical census tract boundaries was original census maps, and for early county boundaries, it was the book: Map Guide to the U.S. Federal Censuses 1790-1920, by William Thorndale and William Dollarhide (Genealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore, MD, c. 1987).
This tool merges two or more shapefiles into a single shapefile. The files to be merged must hae exactly the same column definitions in the .dbf file.
ScapeToad is a tool that allows users to create cartograms based on metrics such as population size or resource usage.
