Research Data Center

The University of Michigan has a Research Data Center which provides the opportunity for researchers to have access to confidential data collected by the Census Bureau.

We can help with exploratory work related to potential applications for access to the confidential census files-items on the file, complex programming, or case counts for small geographies.

However, census microdata files are only a small part of the Research Data Center collection. Contact the Michigan RDC for information on the full array of data included in it, for detailed information on the files, and for help with the application process.

Michigan RDC
The Population Studies Center and ICPSR have seats at the Research Data Center. The PSC seat is for research projects associated with the Population Studies Center. The ICPSR seat can be used by anyone belonging to a member institution of ICPSR.

Disclosure Review Board
The following are the criteria the Disclosure Review Board at the Census Bureau uses for release of special tabulations. These are estimates a researcher might consider when defining an RDC project. The tabulations that leave the RDC will probably need to fit roughly within these parameters.

Center for Economic Studies This is the unit within the Census Bureau that sponsors the Research Data Centers.

Social and Economic Data
This course has been specially prepared for graduate students who are planning to use the RDC-based data or are seriously considering it.
