| Abstract: | The Perinatal Mortality Data File contains data on births, infant deaths, and fetal deaths that occurred in the United States in 1999. Data in this file are based on information from all death certificates filed in the United States and the District of Columbia. Data for Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Guam, American Somoa, and the Northern Marianas are included in tables showing data by State, but are not included in US totals. Three definitions of perinatal mortality are used by NCHS: Perinatal Definition I, generally used for international comparisons, which includes fetal deaths of 28 weeks of gestation or more and infant deaths under 7 days; Perinatal Definition II, which includes fetal deaths of 20 weeks of gestation or more and infant deaths under 28 days; and Perinatal Definition III, which includes fetal deaths of 20 weeks of gestation or more and infant deaths under 7 days. |
