Abstract:The World Fertility Survey (WFS) was established in 1972 as an international research program with three objectives: (1) to assist countries in acquiring scientific information that would permit them to describe and interpret fertility in their countries, (2) to increase the capabilities for fertility and demographic research at the national level, particularly in developing countries, and (3) to provide internationally comparable data on fertility for comparative researchers. The primary dependent variable in the WFS is fertility which is measured in number of events and the intervals between events. A set of mutually exclusive and exhaustive categories through which all forces affecting fertility must operate were gathered (Davis-Blake framework). Examples would be age at entry into sexual union, amount of reproductive period spent after or between unions, and coital frequency. Another set of variables are the explanatory variables: knowledge and attitude toward contraceptives, attitudes related to family size and sex preferences, socioeconomic and cultural characteristics and bio-social characteristics. The WFS has individual level data for female respondents. The specific sampling criteria vary from country to country. In a number of countries data have been collected on characteristics of households and communities.
Universe:Women 15 to 49 years of age who have spent the preceding night in the household.
