| Abstract: | This is the data file for Koray Tanfer’s phD thesis and is not 100% clean. Some questions that were asked in the 1970 census never made it into the original 1% sample tape. This was probably due to the limited objectives of the 1% sample report that SIS prepared at the time. Some inconsistent data (dirty data) still exists and there are problems to solve when the data set is used (e.g. it may be necessary to recode some variables with plausible (consistent) codes or with a code for ‘no data’. It is advised that the user make frequency counts for all variables they use. It would also be prudent to make some simple cross-tables (or logical checks to check on consistency as well.) Like all the census files, the listings are for persons present on census day (exception was made for head of household) This is for the City of Istanbul only. Ilces and villages outside the main municipality are not on the file. Variables include basic demographic and social data (age, sex), relation to head of household, province of residence, province of birth, citizenship, literacy, education, children, employment and occupation. This file does not include occupational status (employee, employer, etc..) because this last variable was lost in a previous copy operation. |
