File Permissions on UNIX

UNIX has a tradition of openness and sharing. Thus, as a default all PSC users can read each others files. This feature can be changed by the owner of the files. The method of changing file permissions depends on the locations of the files.

Local or IFS space

Users files are located on IFS or local drives that reside on our workstations. To determine where a file resides type pwd .

IFS space is indicated by a path name that starts like the following:

/afs/umich.edu/. . .

Local space does not have "/afs/umich.edu" in the path. The following are some examples of local space:
