checklen

Purpose: This program provides a description of the structure of a data set. The parameters it provides are number of records, maximum line length, and minimum line length.

If the data are padded with blanks, the maximum line length is the number of columns with actual data. Blanks used as padding are not counted in the maximum line length.

To run, enter checklen < data

Notes:

1) To run in the background add an ampersand (&) to the run statement:

checklen < data &

2) If data are compressed, the data can be piped in from a decompression program:

zcat data.Z | checklen

3) To send output to a file named doc:

checklen < data > doc
