Q:

I am having trouble opening an IMF government finance statistics data file.

A:

PROC DATASOURCE from SAS is able to read this file.

For certain time series databases, the DATASOURCE procedure has built-in information on the layout of files comprising the database. PROC DATASOURCE knows how to read only these kinds of data files. To access these databases, you must indicate the data file type in the FILETYPE= option. For more detailed information, you should refer to the PROC DATASOURCE (SAS/ETS) documentation.

" INITIALIZE FILENAME REFERENCE FOR IMF FILE;
filename imffil "file-specification" ;
*USE PROC DATASOURCE TO GENERATE SAS DATASET FROM IMF FILE;
proc datasource;
ebcdic;
filetip = imfdotsp;
infile = imf
file;
out = &IMF_SET;
run;
