Q:

I am pulling race-specific county level data from the 1990 summary file data. I have to use the original summary files because neither American FactFinder or NHGIS iterate characteristics across all the race groups I need. However, I am getting strange results. I get multiple records for my counties.

A:

You need to use the GEOCOMP item in the geographic part of the record and delete if the GEOCOMP NE 0.

The multiple records you are getting are characteristics of the total county, the urban part of the county and the rural part of the county. For instance, if you want the characteristics of the rural part of a county, select if GEOCOMP EQ 8.
