Q:

I just downloaded the 2010 shape file for counties. When I open it the water bodies around Michigan are covered like land masses. How do I get the Great Lakes to appear as water?

A:

This problem can be corrected fairly easy. The first step is to overlay a water layer. Click on the + to add data to your map. Proceed to the program files in X86 folder. From there look in the ArcGIS folder and then the bin folder. Go into the TemplateData folder. Open TemplateData.gdb. Go into the USA folder then click on us_lakes. This layer should be added to your table of contents for your map and correct the water problem.
