Abstract
NHGIS provides free Census shapefiles, which can be accessed through two methods.
Users must be registered for access to the data, but the registration access is automated.
NHGIS boundary files are based on the TIGER/Line data that the US Census Bureau creates, which NHGIS staff edited to produce all pre-1990 boundaries. The primary guide for historical census tract boundaries. Boundary files for select geography . All are not available for every year.
