In this story on the life chances of children growing up in poverty, Fabian Pfeffer says that these children do worse than their counterparts from more prosperous households on the very first standardized test given in Michigan kindergartens. “There’s already a gap when they come into school,” says Pfeffer. And the gap doesn't go away; it grows larger.
