Youth, Identity and Gender Bargains: Egypt and the Muslim World

Barbara Ibrahim (The Population Council)

Barbara Ibrahim has been regional director for West Asia and North Africa at the Population Council in Cairo since 1991. She previously served as Middle East program officer for urban poverty and women's studies at the Ford Foundation in Cairo. She received her MA from the American University of Beirut and PhD from Indiana University. She was principal investigator on the national survey adolescents and their parents conducted in Egypt in 1997and participated in a situational analysis of public schools across Egypt in 1999. She is currently consulting groups in Jordan, Palestine and Iran on similar national surveys, as well as launching an sports and intervention study addressing the needs of out-of-school rural girls. Ibrahim was inducted into the Educators Hall of Fame (USA) in 1999 and serves on a number of international boards.
