Lauren Hersch Nicholas is a health economist whose research focuses on the role of public policy in improving health care quality, health and retirement outcomes for the elderly population. She received her PhD in 2008 from Columbia University. Nicholas was awarded the John Heinz award from the National Academy of Social Insurance for dissertation, which examined the quality and cost effects of Medicare managed care. Her current research combines survey, administrative and clinical data to understand the role of individual characteristics, health systems factors and public policy in determining health outcomes. She has received research grants from the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality, the University of Michigan Retirement Research Center, the USDA Research Innovation and Development Grants in Economics Program and the John A. Hartford Foundation.
