This September 2002 article provides a descriptive analysis of Viet Nam's older population based primarily on special tabulations from the 3 percent public use sample of Viet Nam's 1999 census. It also examines changes in living arrangement patterns through comparisons with data from the 1989 census. Recent UN projections estimate that Vietnamese aged 60 and over will constitute almost a quarter of the total population by 2050. A common fear is that the aging population combined with national development will lead to desertion of elderly parents by socially or residentially mobile adult children. The results provided here show no evidence that this is currently occurring in Viet Nam.
