Geographical Differentials in the Socioeconomic Status of Puerto Ricans: The Role of Migration Selectivity and Labor Market Characteristics

Archived Abstract of Former PSC Researcher

Enchautegui, Maria E. 1990. "Geographical Differentials in the Socioeconomic Status of Puerto Ricans: The Role of Migration Selectivity and Labor Market Characteristics." PSC Research Report No. 90-188. June 1990.

Puerto Ricans in the Northeast exhibit a poorer socioeconomic performance than Puerto Ricans in other parts of the country. This paper examines the role of variations in the amount of human capital and labor market conditions in explaining these geographical differentials in socioeconomic status. The results indicate that there is a selective sorting according to human capital characteristics which allocates Puerto Ricans with the largest stock of human capital to non-traditional Puerto Rican settlements. This, combined with favorable labor market conditions results in a better socioeconomic performance for Puerto Ricans outside the Northeast.
