Bound, John, and Carol Kaufman. 1993. "Work, Pay and Educational Attainment among Thai Youths: Results from the 1987 Children and Youth Survey." PSC Research Report No. 93-279. April 1993.
This study explores the association of educational attainment with work and pay among Thai youth, using data from the 1987 Child and Youth Survey (CYS) carried out by the National Statistical Office. The CYS covered a nationally representative sample of approximately 20,000 households and included a number of questions on education and employment especially directed at persons under 25 years of age. Examination of CYS data clearly points to the value of additional schooling among youths who work for pay. This accords with most common perceptions of schooling among Thai parents. Economic constraints on the household's ability to afford the increased expenses associated with secondary and higher education appear to be the main barrier for children from poorer families continuing past primary school.
