Minority Suburban Migration

Investigator:   William H. Frey

This project uses data from the 2000 census to analyze aggregate migration processes for cities and suburbs within the 25 largest U.S. metropolitan areas. Specifically, it explores the demographic and geographic structure of migration for foreign- and native-born minorities versus non-Hispanic whites across these city and suburb communities. It also identifies community determinants of migration streams and destinations for minorities and whites, and shows how they vary across different types of metropolitan areas. Finally, this study assesses the impact of these migration processes on population size and composition patterns for the communities, and projects future impacts.
