This proposal requests an additional round of funding from the Mellon Foundation to support activities of the University of Michigan’s Population Studies Center in the area of urbanization, internal migration, and urban life in developing countries. We understand that this would be the final round of funding under this program, and that all funds would need to be spent by December 31, 2005. We have taken this fact into account in developing our plans for the proposed new funding period. Since we have begun a number of exciting research and training activities under the current program, we very much appreciate the opportunity to get additional funding to bring these activities to a smooth completion. Given the nature of this final round of funding, we have focused on three types of activities in this proposal: 1) completion of activities that were begun during the current funding period; 2) activities that will help ensure the stability of major collaborations and project areas beyond the life of the new grant; 3) activities that can be started and fully completed during the funding period.
