Michigan Center for Health Communications Research

Investigators:   Victor J. Strecher, Susan A. Murphy, Paula M. Lantz, Daniel F. Hayes, Roderick J. Little, Vijayan N. Nair, Priti R. Shah, Peter A. Ubel

The Theory and Measurement Core of the University of Michigan Center for Health Communications Research consists of investigators from each Research Project, along with a team of outstanding experts in health communications and behavior change. The overall purpose of the Theory and Measurement Core is to: (a) utilize the unique expertise of the Center investigators to encourage cross fertilization across the three Research Projects; (b) maximize the internal validity of messages developed for each Project, ensuring messages are consistent with their putative theoretical underpinnings; (c) encourage, to the extent possible, the use of common measures and analytic approaches across the three Research Projects; and (d) assist in the interpretation and integration of results across Projects, and help generate, where possible, unified models of developing and delivering tailored health communications. The specific aims of the Theory and Measurement Core are listed below:

1) Advise investigators in developing, adapting, and pruning assessment measures, and maximizing use of common measures across Projects.

2) Support investigators in developing messages, and maximizing internal validity of each Project by ensuring messages are consistent with the theoretical underpinnings proposed by the investigators;

3) Assist Project Leaders in the interpretation of Project results from both Phase I and Phase II experiments, and in particular, develop an algorithm for determining important variables and individual characteristics that merit further testing between Phases I and II;

4) Synthesize the findings across Research Projects, and to the extent possible, develop unified conceptual models for interpreting study outcomes.
