The major goal of this project is to continue to build a research framework within which particular policies, programs, and practices adopted at the state, community, or school level can be evaluated effectively. The ultimate goals are to help bring about changes in society that will (1) ameliorate the problem behaviors of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use by American young people and (2) change the exercise and dietary habits that contribute to overweight in adolescence, in particular those influenced by characteristics of the school environment. An additional set of goals has to do with monitoring change over time in the relevant environmental characteristics of secondary schools.
