U.S. Census Bureau: PSID Conference on the Use of Event History Calendar

Investigators:   Robert F. Schoeni, Robert F. Belli, Frank P. Stafford

The overarching goal of the work proposed in this proposal is to provide scientific expertise to the Census Bureau in the design of the newly engineered dynamics of economic well-being system (DEWS) in the area of event history calendars (EHCs) as a data collection tool.

Two specific aims are proposed to achieve this goal. First, the University of Michigan will identify leading scientific experts in the area of event history calendars to write a series of analytic paper(s) (number of papers to be determined jointly by the Census Bureau and University of Michigan staff) addressing data quality topics related to EHCs including (but not limited to): assessment of sample attrition, robustness of the resulting estimates (including variance), seam bias, using an EHC for interviewing low-income households with turbulent life-events, evaluation of recall periods (particularly 6 month and 12 month) for these events, and any other relevant EHC topics as they relate to the DEWS.

Second, the University of Michigan will conduct a two-day workshop at which the analytic papers described above will be presented in order to address the methodology and implications of using an electronic EHC versus a standard CAPI instrument as well as address specific questions/issues related to the design/development of the data collection instrument and post-data collection processing system for the DEWS.
