Michigan Center on the Demography of Aging: Coordinating Center Supplement

Investigators:   John Bound, Robert F. Schoeni

The coordinating center supplement request has two aims:

• To support the writing and publication in a leading journal of 10 manuscripts that will be prepared for the 15th anniversary conference of the NIA P30 Demography Centers. The conference will be held in connection with the RAND Summer Institute in July 2009. Goal is to take stock of recent scientific findings and identify emerging areas for research in the coming years. Authors will present papers at the conference and ready them for publication. The editor of the journal Demography has agreed to publish the special issue at a cost that is included in this proposal.

• To facilitate translation of research conducted at the Demography Centers into informed policy deliberations by organizing and conducting two seminars for the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation, HHS. We anticipate organizing two seminars where researchers from the P30 Centers would travel to HHS headquarters to brief ASPE officials and other agency representatives on research relevant to policy issues they face. Possible topics include the Medicare Part D program, new methods for forecasting Medicare expenditures and disability, developments in retirement research, and health and well-being accounts, and disability decline.

Funding Period: 08/01/2008 to 06/30/2009
