ASSISTANT SPECIALIST IN SURVEY RESEARCH, Position No. 84585, UHM College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, Center on the Family, 100%, 11-month tenure track, to begin August 1, 2006, or as soon as possible thereafter.

Duties: Conduct research and outreach activities relating to the well-being of families in Hawaii and disseminate results to academic and community audiences. Provide leadership and guidance to Center projects on survey methods, including research design, implementation, analysis, and interpretation. Work as a team member on the Web-based Data Center on Families, Children, and Older Adults to (a) develop social indicators; (b) participate in strategic planning; and (c) represent the Data Center with government and community agencies. Seek extramural funds. Provide service to the University and community, and perform other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications: Doctoral degree in a social science, health, or related field with a specialization in survey methods and techniques. Experience in designing probability sample surveys; developing and validating survey instruments; monitoring fieldwork; processing, documenting, and analyzing large data sets; and/or design and management of relational databases. Evidence of a programmatic research or outreach agenda. Ability to (a) conduct effective presentations and workshops, (b) develop publications for academic and community audiences, (c) collaborate effectively with persons from diverse backgrounds. Excellent writing and verbal communication skills. ABD applicants must have the degree requirements completed at the time of hire.

Desirable Qualifications: Expertise in statistical modeling, sample weighting, measurement, program evaluation, and/or surveys with difficult to reach populations. A content area specialty relating to the Center’s mission of supporting and strengthening families in Hawaii, e.g., family dynamics; quality of life; risk and prevention; health, education, or economic disparities; Asian American/Pacific Islander populations. Success in academic publishing and/or grantsmanship.
