Abstract:This is a constructed file from the original 1984 Costa Rican Census of Population and Housing. It was constructed by Roger Avery. We do not have the original source file. The variables included in the census are geographic location down to the district level, type of housing, tenure, material and quality for wall, roof, floor, number of room and details on types of room, source and continuity of water, information on bathing, sanitary, lighting, and cooking, availability of selected appliances, and presence of farm animals. The person items include relation to head, age, sex, birthplace down to district, year of immigration, social security coverage, school enrollment, school attainment and literacy, marital status, labor force status, principal occupation, type of employment, industry, hours of work, children every born, and children surviving.
The constructed file is a rectangular file with the housing and person characteristics on a single record. Three new variables are included in the file: the person number within the household of spouse, the person number of mother, and the number of children matched to each woman. Documentation of the creation of these variables is included in the documentation. Two variables were dropped from the original data: amount of rent and the nationality of the individual. 666 persons, all of the members of 139 households in San Jose province were lost because of problems reading the original tape.
Universe:Unknown; quite a bit of text in Spanish in documentation. Not sure of sampling ratio for file either (e.g., 1%, 5%, etc.).
