Online Databases

This is an alphabetical list of selected databases in social sciences available to University of Michigan affiliates. For a more comprehensive list of all resources available to the UM community, please visit the University Library Search Tools.

NBR's AccessAsia maintains several databases, including a specialist database that tracks the expertise and current research of leading experts on contemporary Asian affairs.

Access UN
This database contains complete bibliographic citations of UN documents and publications. Indexes United Nations documents since 1966, including Official Records, sales publications, masthead documents.

Access World News
Full text of over 600 US newspapers and over 260 English language newspapers from other countries worldwide. Includes New York Times (2000- ), Ann Arbor News (2003-2009), Detroit News (1999- ), Chicago Tribune (1985- ), The Times (London), etc.

Africa Development Indicators
Africa Development Indicators contains over 1,600 indicators and time series from 1961 to the present for 53 countries.

Africa-Wide Information
Africa-Wide is a combination of two well-known databases, South African Studies and African Studies, published by Ebsco. It consists of more than 30 different database files from Africa, Europe and the U.S. with nearly two million records indexing articles, books, newspapers, government documents, radio and TV broadcasts, pamphlets, maps, theses, and music recordings. Topics covered include politics, history, economics, business, mining, natural sciences, environment, development, social issues, anthropology, literature, language, law, music, tourism and much more.

Indexes and abstracts books, journals, research reports, consumer guides, and book chapters in the field of aging.

Annual Reviews
Provides access to authoritative, analytic reviews of research in 29 focused disciplines within the Biological & Medical, Physical, and Social Sciences. Permits searching within these three broad categories or across all 29 titles.

Antropology Plus (Ebsco)
A comprehensive, international index to the literature of anthropology and archaeology. Anthropology Plus combines two major indexes: Anthropological Literature from Harvard's Peabody Museum and the Royal Anthropological Institute's Anthropological Index, from the UK. Includes journal articles, reports, commentaries and obituaries of at least two pages in length, from over 2,500 core journals journals and books in monographic series. Covers the fields of social, cultural, physical, biological, and linguistic anthropology, ethnology, archaeology, folklore, and material culture. Covers early 19th century to the present.

Bibliography of Asian Studies
Contains over 410,000 citations to western-language periodical articles and books published on all subjects pertaining to East, Southeast, and South Asia.

Black Studies on Disc 2000
Information on materials by and about African Americans, Africa and peoples of African ancestry. Includes catalog of the Schomberg Center for Research in Black Culture and citations from the Index to Black periodicals.

China Data Online
Collection of databases including: statistical yearbooks, census data and other databases.

China Academic Journals
Full-text access to more than 6000 academic journals published in China. Currently we are subscribed to three of the nine categories offered: humanities, business and law, and social sciences.

Congressional Universe
Congressional committee publications, hearings (full text since 1988), committee prints, reports, text of bills, and public laws since 1970 and Federal Register.

Criminal Justice Abstracts
Criminal Justice Abstracts, the criminology database from Sage Publications, Inc., contains comprehensive coverage of international journals, books, reports, dissertations and unpublished papers on criminology and related disciplines.

Dissertation Abstracts
Indexing and authors' abstracts of all dissertations in all subjects accepted at all accredited institutions in the U.S. and Canada.

Access to over 80 databases provided by EBSCO including AgeLine, Child Development, Criminal Justice Abstracts, Family & Society Studies, Global Health, Health and Psychosocial Instruments, Mental Measurements Yearbook, PsycINFO and Social Science Abstracts.

This database is published by the American Economic Association and provides bibliographic coverage of a wide range of economics-related literature. An expanded version of the Journal of Economic Literature (JEL) indexes of journals, books and dissertations, EconLit covers both economic theory and application.

ERIC (Educational Resources Information Centers
The database contains more than 1,000,000 abstracts of documents and journal articles on education research and practice. Indexes journal articles, government publications and unpublished materials such as conference papers, reports, theses and more.

Ethnic NewsWatch
A full text database of 200 publications of the ethnic, minority and native press. Searchable in both English and Spanish, with titles in both languages. Includes more than 100,000 articles in Spanish and over 400,000 in English.

Family & Society Studies Worldwide
A comprehensive resource of research, policy and practice literature in the fields of family science, human ecology and development, and social welfare. Provides abstracts and bibliographic records from 2,000+ journals, books, reports, and other sources.

Foundation Directory Online
Profiles over 70,000 U.S.-based foundations, describing programs, areas of funding, types of support, geographic emphasis, trustees & officers, application process, deadlines, and lists of recent grants made. Updated biweekly.

A full text database of 140 international publications devoted to women's and gender issues, including scholarly journals, magazines, and newspapers, plus reports, pamphlets, papers and conference proceedings.

Global Health (CABI)
Global Health is a public health database that provides information on international health, biomedical life sciences, non-communicable diseases, public health nutrition, food safety and hygiene, and much more.

Google Book Search
Searches the full text of books, including those in the University of Michigan Libraries that have been scanned by Google. For works in the public domain, provides complete full text; for works under copyright, provides either brief snippets showing location of search terms or limited previews provided by cooperating publishers. Provides links to "Find in a library" and/or purchase from a vendor.

Google Scholar (with UM Ann Arbor MGet It Links)
The Google Scholar search engine that searches for scholarly documents on the World Wide Web, with the added feature of MGet It (labeled as "Availability at UMichigan") links from University of Michigan at Ann Arbor that connect you to the online and print versions held by the University Library.

Health and Psychosocial Instruments
Indexes journal articles that describe or utilize tests and measures used in health care, psychosocial sciences and organizational behavior. Also provides some information about the tests.

Hispanic American Periodicals Index
Provides citations drawn from more than 400 journals, primarily in Spanish or English, which cover Latin America, the Caribbean, and Hispanics in the United States.

Historical Statistics of the United States: Millennial Edition
The online version of the revised five-volume reference work. Topics ranging from migration and health to crime and the Confederate States of America are each placed in historical context by a recognized expert in the field. The fully searchable and downloadable electronic edition will permit users to graph individual tables and create customized tables and spreadsheets.

Human Relations Area Files (World Cultures)
Ethnographic texts on world's cultures indexed by culture and subject.

ICPSR Data Archive
The Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research maintains the world's largest archive of computerized, numeric social science data. Topics covered include demography, economics, health care, politics, social behavior, public opinion.

International Encyclopedia of the Social & Behavioral Sciences
Online version of the largest reference work published in the social and behavioral sciences.

International Political Science Abstracts
International Political Science Abstracts (IPSA), provides abstracts of about 8,000 political science articles per year, published in scholarly journals and yearbooks worldwide. Topics include method and theory, political thinkers, ideas, administrative institutions, national and area studies. IPSA is produced and published bimonthly by the International Political Science Association.

Journal Citation Reports
Provides citation impact factors for 8,400+ scholarly and technical journals worldwide.

Indexes major law reviews, law journals, specialty law and bar association journals, and legal newspapers covering U.S. federal and state cases, laws, government regulations & legal practice; British Commonwealth, European Union & international law.

Provides full-text access to a wide range of news, business, legal, and reference information, including hundreds of U.S. and foreign newspapers, legal and business publications, wire services, broadcast media transcripts, and trade/news magazines.

MedLine via Ovid
The MEDLINE database is widely recognized as the premier source for bibliographic and abstract coverage of biomedical literature. MEDLINE encompasses information from Index Medicus, Index to Dental Literature, and International Nursing, as well as other sources of coverage in the areas of allied health, biological and physical sciences, humanities and information science as they relate to medicine and health care, communication disorders, population biology, and reproductive biology. Coverage 1950 to present.

Mental Measurements Yearbook
Contains descriptive information and critical reviews of more than 2,000 commercially-available standardized English-language educational, personality, aptitude, neuro-psychological, achievement and intelligence tests.

OECD iLibrary
Online library of the Organisation of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Includes full-text of all books, 24 periodicals and the OECD statistical databases.

PubMed with UM Journal Links
The National Library of Medicine's comprehensive database to journal citations in the biomedical sciences.

PubMed Central (PMC)
PMC is a free full-text archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature at the U.S. National Institutes of Health's National Library of Medicine.

Polling the Nations
Compilation of questions and responses from more than 6,500 national, state, local and special surveys in the U.S. and over 60 other countries.

Worldwide coverage of population, family planning, and related health issues, including family planning technology and programs, fertility, and population law and policy.

Population Index
Coverage: 1986-2000
Description: Annotated bibliography of recently published books, journal articles, working papers, and other materials on population topics.

Access to ProQuest Research Library, a general periodical index with full text; ProQuest Newspapers, indexing and full text of 9 major English-language newspapers from the U.S. and abroad.

ProQuest Sociology
This set has 16 databases that include Sociological Abstract, ProQuest Sociology, Dissertations, PAIS International, and EconLit.

ProQuest Statistical Abstract of the United States
The US Census Bureau published the Statistical Abstract of the United States from 1878-2012. The company ProQuest picked up the series beginning in 2013.

ProQuest Statistical Insight
Indexes and abstracts federal statistical publications since 1974, business and state government publications since 1980, and international agency publications since 1983. Provides links to full text of 15% of federal publications. Firefox and Internet Explorer recommended. Does not work with Safari.

PsychARTICLES (APA full-text journal articles)
Full text articles from journals published by the American Psychological Association.

Coverage: 1887 - present
Description: Citations to international periodical literature in psychology and related disciplines. Also includes citations to dissertations and some book chapters.

APA PsycTESTS provides access to psychological tests, measures, scales, surveys, and other assessments as well as descriptive information about the test and its development and administration.

Social Explorer
Social Explorer provides easy access to demographic information about the United States, from 1790 to present. Create maps and reports based on decennial censuses of 1940 to 2000.

Social Science Electronic Data Library
A health and social science resource that consists of over 680 data sets from over 280 different studies funded by NIH and NSF.

Social Science Research Network
Devoted to the rapid dissemination of research in the areas of accounting, economics, financial economics, Latin America, and legal scholarship. Includes email abstracting service and searchable database of abstracts and working papers.

Social Sciences Citation Index
Coverage: 1900 - present
Description: A multidisciplinary database, with searchable author abstracts, covering the journal literature of the social sciences. It indexes 1,700 journals spanning 50 disciplines.

Sociological Abstracts
Coverage: 1952 - present
Description: Citations and abstracts of journal articles concerning all aspects of sociology published in Sociological Abstracts and Social Planning Policy and Development Abstracts.

Tests and Measures in the Social Sciences: Tests available in compilation volumes
An index for finding tests and measurement instruments in print compilations, web sites and other resources.

UN Data
You can find official statistics produced by countries and compiled by United Nations data system, as well as estimates and projections. The domains covered are agriculture, education, energy, industry, labour, national accounts, population and tourism.

Wanfang Chinese Studies Online
Currently includes the following three online databases: China Online Journals (COJ) in Arts/Humanities, Social Sciences (万方数字化期刊); Dissertations of China (DOC) in Arts/Humanities, Social Sciences (万方学位论文数据库); Policies and Laws of China (PLOC).

Web of Knowledge
Coverage: 1900 - present (varies by database)
Combines three citation indexes--Arts & Humanities, Science Expanded, and Social Sciences--which permit searching for articles that cite a known author or work, as well as searching by subject, author, journal, and author address. Covers 8,400+ journals.

World Bank e-Library
Online, fully cross-searchable and browsable collection of over 3,900 World Bank documents. The collection consists of over 1,600 World Bank publications and over 2,300 Policy Research Working Papers, plus each new book and paper as they are published.

OCLC FirstSearch. Over 40 million citations to books, periodicals, sound recordings, videos, musical scores, archival materials and much more, representing holdings of most libraries in North America and some in Asia and Europe.

World Bank Data
Coverage: 1960 - present
Description: Economic development data from 551 statistical series for 224 countries and ethnic groups of the world, compiled by the World Bank. Specific series and countries/groups can be selected for specific year ranges, and data can be exported.
