Aging in Mexico

A PSC Brown Bag Seminar

Beth Soldo (University of Pennsylvania, Sociology)

Tuesday, 4/20/2004.   ARCHIVED EVENT

Location: 6050 ISR Thompson St

Beth Soldo, Distinguished Senior Scholar and professor of sociology at the University of Pennsylvania, will be discussing "Aging in Mexico." Beth will present an overview of the Mexican Health and Aging Study (MHAS), which she directs. MHAS is similar in objectives, design, and content to the HRS, but transporting a study to another culture is not simply an issue of translation. Beth will describe the accommodations made in fielding MHAS using data from the 2001 baseline and the 2003 follow-up, as well as additional enhancements planned for 2005. Following this she will present recent research on the prevalence of diabetes in Mexico, emphasizing the early life determinants of diabetes in cohorts of older Mexicans where substantial numbers were exposed to chronic malnutrition, poverty, and a range of infectious and parasitic diseases.

PSC Brown Bag seminars highlight recent research in population studies and serve as a focal point for building our research community.
