Educational Transitions in Egypt

The Millennium Development Goals have focused attention on completion of, and gender equity in, basic education. Some have suggested, however, that greater attention should be paid to the need of students to move beyond basic education, since simply literacy is insufficient for functioning well in today’s society. In this work we the proximate determinants of education structure to examine transitions into and beyond basic education using DHS data from Egypt during the period 1988 to 2005. We show that beyond primary education transition levels are generally higher than they are for entry into and completion of basic education. Moreover, both socioeconomic and gender equity are greater in later transitions than they are in the transition for basic education. We therefore conclude that a continued focus on basic education is warranted. Once children enter school and complete basic education, their path through subsequent levels of education is smoother.
