Harvard’s Gary King discusses the concept of “compact” with regard to legislative districts and the survey method and statistical model he and his colleagues developed to predict with high accuracy, and solely from the geometric features of the district, compactness evaluations by judges and other public officials from many jurisdictions, as well as experts, academics, and Mechanical Turk workers.
