Faculty input on UM Biosciences Initiative

Thursday, 12/14/2017, 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm.   ARCHIVED EVENT

Location: Ford Amphitheater, University Hospital

Three town hall meetings will gather faculty input on U-M's Biosciences Initiative, whose goal is to create programs that will lead efforts across the breadth of biosciences research to solve critical global problems. Key elements in the initiative are to hire 30 tenure-track faculty members over the next five years, to seek/fund proposals that leverage current strengths and emerging areas in the biosciences at U-M, and to expand the Biological Sciences Scholars Program to represent units outside the medical school. ISR's Rich Gonzalez serves on the Coordinating Committee, which will help identify research areas in the biosciences that are promising for additional investment.

Roger Cone, director, says these town hall meetings are seeking "creative ideas around how the Biosciences Initiative process can stimulate the best, most cutting-edge proposals that will lead to forward looking, high-impact scientific research initiatives across the university." U-M President Schlissel highlighted the "potential for our faculty to integrate across disciplines and make truly novel contributions to human understanding."

The town halls are aimed at U-M faculty members who work in the biosciences and related fields. The events will be held:

• Nov. 28, 3:30-5 p.m., Northeast Room, Pierpont Commons.

• Dec. 7, 3-4:30 p.m., Vandenberg Room, Michigan League.

• Dec. 14, 3-4:30 p.m., Ford Amphitheater, University Hospital.
