DemSemX - Designing COVID-19 Research

a Seminar

Wendy Manning (Bowling Green State University)
Elizabeth Wrigley-Field (Minnesota)

Friday, 5/29/2020, 2:00pm to 4:00pm

Location: Webinar

We'd like to introduce you to a new collaborative effort that will virtually bring together faculty and students from 8 U.S. population research centers (Bowling Green, Cornell, Michigan, Minnesota, Penn State, UCLA, UT-Austin and UW-Madison) to enhance scholarly interaction and graduate training across institutions. Leaders/senior faculty of these centers are alumni of UW-Madison, where the weekly Demography Seminar ('DemSem') was (and remains) a key feature of graduate training, just as is our center's regular research seminar. Together, we aim to take advantage of new virtual technologies and economies of scale to provide opportunities for scholarly interaction and training across our 8 centers. We especially hope to provide opportunities for students to present and get feedback on their work and to interact with other emerging and established scholars from these centers.

Part I: Designing COVID-19 Research, 2:00-3:00pm ET

Wendy Manning (Bowling Green) and Elizabeth Wrigley-Field (Minnesota) will present and field questions on their new plans underway for conducting COVID-19 responsive research.

Part II: Virtual Roundtables with Student Presentations, 3:00-4:00pm ET

Two students per 'breakout room' will have 15 minutes each to talk about their own research (most likely NOT COVID-related). The remainder of the time will be Q & A/discussion of the two student projects. The breakout rooms will include two faculty/researchers with expertise in the students' research area, as well as other interested faculty and students. Attendees can move between breakout rooms (similar to roundtables at a conference).
