The overall objective of this paper is to present the approach taken to the measurement of health, disease and dysfunction in the Health and Retirement Study cohort. The paper: 1) reviews selected methodologic issues concerning the relation between personal health and the retirement decision; 2) discusses the rationale for the choices of health measures, instruments and scales; 3) addresses the validity and reliability of the health items; 4) presents tabulations of basic health findings to guide analysts; and 5) discusses the limitations of the health variables selected.
