In Asia, the decline of fertility and consequent ageing of the population are likely to be seen as the most significant demographic developments during the past and the upcoming half century. The implications of both for social and economic life are far-reaching and profound. This article reviews recent demographic analyses, explores future challenges, and posits a research agenda for population ageing.
