Heart Steps: Adaptive mHealth intervention for physical activity maintenance

Many of the risk factors for heart disease are behavioral, such as physical inactivity, smoking, and diets high in saturated and trans-fats. To successfully reduce such risks and adopt a heart-healthy lifestyle, individuals have to make many healthy decisions throughout the day, often when they are not thinking about health but are busy with work, family, and recreational activities. Cardiac rehabilitation and other secondary prevention programs are effective in helping individuals make the initial lifestyle changes needed to reduce their risks, but individuals often fail to maintain those changes after the program ends. In this grant, the investigators propose to develop a novel mHealth application for supporting maintenance of physical activity after cardiac patients finish cardiac rehabilitation.
The Michigan Team:
Dr. Murphy will lead the data analytic strategy for the grant, the methodological design of studies in Aim 2 and Aim 3, and data analysis of the study results. In addition, she will contribute to the development of the learning algorithms that will be developed during the project. Dr. Murphy will be an active author in study publications and presenter of study results.
Dr. Tewari will lead the development and tuning of the learning algorithms that will enable adaptation and personalization in the intervention that will be developed during the project. As part of this work, he will supervise the graduate student during year two of the project. In addition, Dr. Tewari will lead the analysis of Aim 2 data related to effectiveness of the learning algorithms developed during the project, and will contribute to study publications and presentations.
Dr. Jackson will be in charge of ensuring that the intervention developed during the project is clinically-appropriate, and will work with the Dr. Klasnja, the PI, and Dr. Eric Hekler (PI of second subcontract at Arizona State University) in establishing application logic around clinically-appropriate physical-activity targets, and changes in individuals? activity goals. Dr. Jackson will be the physician on call in case of any medical emergencies during Aim 2.
Under the guidance of Drs. Tewari and Murphy, the postdoctoral fellow will work on the development of the learning algorithms and their implementation in a form that can be incorporated into the intervention application. The postdoc will also be responsible for implementing all explicit decision rules required by the intervention application (e.g., which activity suggestion to present to a particular person at a particular time). The postdoc will also assist in the analysis of the data.
The requested graduate student will assist Drs. Murphy and Tewari on the construction and maintence of the mobile application. The graduate student will assist Dr. Tewari in addressing mobile phone software problems that may arise during the conduct of the study in year 1. The graduate student will assist Drs. Murphy and Tewari in preparing seminars and workshops.
The requested Study Coordinator will be responsible for patient recruitment for all studies in the project, obtaining human subjects approvals, managing required study documentation (informed consent, HIPAA waivers, etc.), and filing adverse events paperwork.
The requested temporary student will be responsible for the visual design of the intervention application previously developed, as well as assisting with the conduct of design groups, and data analysis. The student will also be responsible for providing technical support to study participants when they encounter technical difficulties with the intervention application.
